Onward to Year Six
On August 30, members of the North Central Comprehensive Center (NCCC) Advisory Board came together in Denver to reflect on our year-five projects, and to provide input and guidance into year-six planning. Board members identified the following needs: developing statewide systems of communication; data collection and evaluation; and understanding what data to collect as an indicator of student success beyond academic test scores (known as the "fifth indicator") for accountability purposes.
We also discussed how the NCCC could provide supports in these areas through regional and individual state-level support. In addition, we were joined by Peter Zamora, federal programs director of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and Katie Carroll, CCSSO's senior program associate, for an update on pending federal legislation and the feedback states are receiving from the U.S. Department of Education on their Every Student Succeeds Act state plans. One advisory board member commented that this meeting helped them to "obtain valuable understanding of the NCCC's work and its relationship and support of SEAs (state education agencies) and potential work with LEAs (local education agencies)." Another said, "As a small state, we do have capacity issues at the SEA, and so the support we receive from the NCCC is extremely helpful." The NCCC team agreed that this was a highly productive meeting. Overall the goals were achieved, and we are looking forward to our continued productive partnerships with our states in year six of this grant. For more information, please contact Dr. Adena Miller.
