North Dakota Department of Public Instruction Begins Development of Standards in Four Content Areas
During the week of January 22, 2018, North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (ND DPI) hosted content specialists at the state capitol in Bismarck to initiate development of new content standards in K-12 arts (dance, music, theatre, and visual arts); health; science; and early learning (birth to age 5). Committee members were selected through a publicly advertised application process and will participate in at least eight days of decision-making activities to identify the content all students should know, understand, and be able to do within these four areas. Committee members were welcomed to the meeting by the state superintendent Kirsten Baesler and ND DPI content leads, who helped members understand the overall standards development process and their role in this effort.
The NCCC helped ND DPI organize and lead this initiative. NCCC identified committee resources, developed websites for collaboration and document sharing, and facilitated committee meetings. NCCC was supported by the Center on Standards and Assessment Implementation (CSAI), one of the Comprehensive Center network organizations, with extensive experience in standards development. Committee members will meet again in March, June, and August of 2018, with standards being finalized in the fall. For more information, please contact Kathleen Dempsey.
