ESSA Implementation

Supporting the Nebraska ESSA Plan Development

Problem Statement: The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed into law in December 2015, reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and goes into effect in the 2017-2018 school year. With the passage of ESSA, each state is required to submit a Consolidated State ESSA Plan to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) by September 2017. The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) is scheduled to release the first draft of the plan in March 2017 for public input. Nebraska’s plan, which must be developed through consultation and collaboration with stakeholders, will be submitted in September 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of the project is to ensure NDE has increased capacity develop the state’s ESSA Consolidated Plan by proving technical assistance related to engagement with stakeholders and tribal communities, and writing of the plan.
Priority Area: ESSA Implementation
Expected Outcomes:
1. NDE has increased collaboration with external stakeholders
2. NDE has increased collaboration with Nebraska tribal communities
3. ESSA is formalized into an actionable, goals-based plan to meet the needs of Nebraska students
