South Dakota ESSA Accountability System Development and Implementation


Problem Statement: The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires states to develop and implement their own systems to hold schools accountable for equity and student achievement by the 2017-2018 school year. While parts of South Dakota’s current system under their Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) waiver address issues of equity and student achievement for the lowest performing schools, there are additional requirements under ESSA that South Dakota needs to address.
Purpose: The SSRAS overarching goal is to increase student achievement and eliminate achievement gaps in South Dakota's lowest performing schools. NCCC work in Year 5 will build on Year 4 work to help SD DOE develop and implement an SSRAS system that meets ESSA requirements.
Priority Area: ESSA Implementation
Expected Outcomes:
1. LEAs have resources to inform their selection of evidence-based practices for school improvement.
2. ESSA formalized into an actionable, goals-based plan to meet the needs of South Dakota Students. 3. SD has a process in place for ongoing ESSA tribal consultation.
