NCCC Advisory Board Gathers in Denver
As the school year began in many places across the region, the North Central Comprehensive Center (NCCC) Advisory Board gathered in Denver, Colo., to network, provide input on Center services, and discuss the intricacies of implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Peter Zamora, Director of Federal Relations for the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), attended the meeting to facilitate the ESSA discussion and respond to questions from Board members.
Key topics covered during the meeting included the role of assessments in ESSA, and how to support the lowest performing schools. State education agency leaders from Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming shared their processes for engaging stakeholders and their progress toward ESSA plan development. Board members also offered their thoughts on potential NCCC regional projects with the issue of chronic absenteeism rising to the top of the list. NCCC plans to conduct a literature review focusing on what other states, districts, and schools have done to address this issue. The U.S. Department of Education has several resources on the topic, including an interactive report titled Chronic Absenteeism in the Nation's Schools. Board members especially enjoyed the opportunity to network with other state representatives as they all embrace the opportunities and challenges presented with the historic passage of ESSA.
