Biannual Meeting of the Title III Professional Development Cadre


On November 8, 2018, thirty-three educators from across the state of Nebraska met for a biannual meeting of the Title III Professional Development Cadre in Omaha, Nebraska. Terri Schuster, Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) Title III Director, welcomed the group and reminded them of the importance of returning to their schools, districts, Educational Service Units (ESU), and colleges and sharing learnings from the day. For example, Terri explained the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Indicator, which will be used to measure the percentage of ELs in a school/district who are on track toward proficiency as measured by the English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century (ELPA21) assessment system.



During the meeting, educators were introduced to the Secondary ELL Working Group and its resources. In December 2017, members of this group joined math educators to align new math standards with the English Languge Proficiency standards. Leveraging the expertise of educators participating in the meeting, North Central Comprehensive Center (NCCC) Title III ELL Project Lead Jane Hill, sought feedback on an infographic the NDE is preparing for parents to better understand the EL program enrollment process, and on a look-for document principals can use while observing in regular education classrooms serving ELs. Jane also engaged attendees in a workshop entitled “Moving ELs from Speaking to Writing.” The Title III Professional Development Cadre will meet again at ESU 3 on April 4, 2019.
